Custom Cables

Custom cables and cable assemblies built to your print by Micro-Ray Electronics in Brick, New Jersey. We have been making them since 1984. Send a drawing, a sample, or simply the two part numbers you need joined, and we will quote the assembly — your quantities, on your schedule.

Build your assembly online — pick the connector for each end and the cable in between, add the length and send us the drawing.

What we build

• Connector to connector — both ends terminated to your pin-out, any length.
• Connector to flying leads — pigtails cut to length, stripped and tinned, or left blunt.
• M12, M8 and M16 cordsets — overmoulded or field-wireable, straight or right angle, A, B, C, D and X coded, shielded or unshielded.
• Network and modular assemblies — RJ11, RJ12 and RJ45 patch cords, keystone and panel-mount jacks, M12 to RJ45 IP67 leads.
• Wire-to-board harnesses — built on our JST- and Molex-equivalent housings and crimp contacts.
• Circular power and signal leads — LP-20, LP-24, DH-20 and DH-24 series, and MIL-DTL-5015 style circulars for industrial use.
• Vending and bill-acceptor harnesses — MDB cables, coin changer and validator leads, adapter harnesses between generations.
• Terminal and lug assemblies — ring, spade, fork, blade and pin terminals crimped to gauge.
• Panel and board work — control panels, light PC board assembly and the boxed sub-assemblies that go around a harness.

How a custom assembly is quoted

1. Send the print, a photo of the old part, or the builder form. If all you have is a failed sample, that is enough to start.
2. We price the connectors, the cable and the labour, and tell you the minimum we can run.
3. If anything has to be tooled, you get the real tooling cost, the real minimum and the real lead time before you commit. Sometimes a factory will not make a custom part at the quantity you need, and we will say so rather than quote around it.
4. Ask for a sample before the production run and we will quote one.
5. Put a blanket order in place and the material sits on our shelf for your release dates, not on a lead time.

What we need from you

• The connector at each end, or the part it has to mate with
• Cable type, conductor count, gauge, and whether it has to be shielded
• Overall length and the tolerance you can live with
• Pin-out and wire colours
• Wire end preparation — strip length, tinned or untinned, ferrule or terminal
• Quantity now, and the annual usage if you know it
• Any approval the finished assembly must carry, and any country-of-origin requirement

Why buyers design us in

We stock it, we modify it, or we build it. Most customers design us in as their second source and we usually end up being the first — because we do not discontinue your part. As long as you need it, we keep it in production. You also talk to the owner rather than a call centre.

Questions we are asked

Can you copy a custom cable from an old sample?

Yes. Send the sample or a photo of it. If all you have is a failed cable, that is enough to start the quote.

What do you need to quote a custom cable assembly?

The connector at each end, the cable, the length, the pin-out and the quantity. The full list is above; anything you do not know, we can work out from the mating part.

Will you tell me the minimum order?

Yes. The quote states the minimum we can run, and if anything has to be tooled you get the tooling cost, the minimum and the lead time before you commit.

Can I get a sample before the production run?

Yes. Ask for one and we will quote it.

Can you hold cables for scheduled releases?

Yes. Put a blanket order in place and the material sits on our shelf for your release dates.
