M12 Connectors: A-Coded, B, D and X-Coded

M12 connectors are circular industrial connectors with a 12 mm threaded coupling, used in automation, sensors and control systems where the connection has to survive vibration, water and dust. Micro-Ray supplies 59 male and female M12 connectors: A, B and D coded field-wireable plugs, X-coded 8-pin Ethernet connectors, panel mount receptacles (front and rear fastened), PCB mount and overmolded parts, plus M12 to RJ45 adapters and panel shells.

M12 connector styles on this page

  • M12 panel mount connectors — male and female receptacles, front or rear fastened, with PG9, M16×1.5 or M12×1 threads and solder cup, wire lead or PCB terminations.
  • M12 field-wireable connectors — straight and right-angle plugs and sockets you terminate on site, 3 to 17 pins.
  • X-coded M12 — 8-pin shielded connectors, overmolded, crimp, solder and PCB versions, plus X-coded to RJ45 adapters for 10 Gbit Ethernet.

For assembled cordsets and patch leads, see M12 Cables.

M12 coding: A, B, C, D, X, S and T

The coding is a key in the insert that stops connectors for different jobs from mating by mistake.

Code Typically used for
A Sensors, actuators and DC power
B PROFIBUS and fieldbus
C AC power
D 100 Mbit Ethernet, 4 pins
X 10 Gbit Ethernet, 8 pins, shielded
S AC power, replacing C-coded power components
T DC power

A-coded, D-coded and X-coded M12 connectors

  • A, B or D coded — the field-wireable MR-M12-GN-02 right-angle female plug (3, 4, 5, 8 or 12 pins) and the MR-M12-FW-08 shielded metal male plug (3, 4, 5, 8 or 12 cores) are listed in A, B and D coding. Tell us the coding and pin count you need when you ask for a quote.
  • X-coded — 21 parts, all 8-pin and shielded: overmolded, crimp and solder connectors, PCB and panel sockets, I-type adapters, and M12 X-coded to RJ45 adapters in straight and 90° angled versions.
  • Panel mount and the other field-wireable parts — the coding is confirmed against the datasheet on your quotation. Most sensor and power circuits use A coding.

How to choose an M12 connector

  • Coding — match the coding of the device you are mating to.
  • Pin count — the number of contacts the circuit needs.
  • Male or female — male connectors carry pins, female carry sockets; the device side is usually one and the cable the other.
  • Mounting — panel mount through a housing wall, PCB mount on a board, or a field-wireable plug on the cable.
  • Thread and fastening — front or rear fastened, and the panel thread (PG9, M16×1.5 or M12×1).
  • Termination — solder cup, wire leads, crimp, PCB pins or screw terminals.

Questions we are asked

Are M12 connectors waterproof?

Most connectors on this page are rated IP67 or IP68 when mated and tightened; each part page gives that part’s own rating.

What is the difference between A-coded and D-coded M12?

A-coded is the general sensor and power coding, with the widest choice of pin counts. D-coded has 4 pins and is used for 100 Mbit Ethernet. They are keyed differently and do not mate with each other.

Can you build M12 cable assemblies?

Yes. Micro-Ray builds M12 cordsets and connector-to-connector assemblies to your length and pinout. Send a drawing or description through the quote form.
